David Baratta's Story

David Baratta purchased a home and considered remodeling to include additional square footage. Upon inspecting the age of the equipment in the home, he determined this would also be the right time to replace the air conditioning unit (A/C).

“Their technicians were polite and knowledgeable. I like that they did what they said they were going to do the first time, and that I didn’t have to chase them. That’s just how they operate."

David Baratta

Arizona Comfort Specialists (ACS) was hired as one of the sub-contractors, but David decided not to move forward with the full remodel. Soon after, David received an outrageous electric bill in June, one of the hottest months in Arizona. Although it was determined the high bill was due to a billing miscalculation and the issue was resolved, this triggered David to have the A/C system evaluated, and he contacted ACS.

David’s existing A/C system was old, noisy, and leaked Freon. ACS owner John, provided information on various options, and thoroughly reviewed them with David. “John went through the difference between manufacturers, and warranties in detail. He was perfectly content to let me make the choice until I asked him what he would suggest to me if I was a family or a friend, and he told me. This is the unit we ended up going with, and we are very happy with it.”

David was mostly impressed by their expertise and great customer service. “Their technicians were polite and knowledgeable. I like that they did what they said they were going to do the first time, and that I didn’t have to chase them. That’s just how they operate."

How to Check Whether or Not Your Home Is Compatible with A Smart Thermostat

There are many smart thermostats on the market today with various features, and choosing the right one can be a challenging task. Before purchasing a new thermostat, consider the following tips:

  • Know your equipment - It is important to know which type of heating and cooling system is in your home (i.e., heat pump, gas furnace and coil, electric heat, etc.). In addition, knowing whether or not your system is single or 2 stage also makes a difference.
  • Know your home - How large or small is your home? Do you have multiple units or multiple floors? Smart thermostats vary by design, and depending on your home layout, some options are better than others.
  • Check the amount of wiring going to your thermostat - In order to use a smart thermostat, you must have at least one vacant wire. This wire would be used as the ‘’C” or “common” wire. Typical smart thermostats require a “common” to replace batteries. To check this, remove the thermostat from the wall plate or base that is anchored to your wall. Thermostats typically hinge on the top of the wall mount. Therefore, pull in a swinging motion from the bottom, outwards towards the ceiling. Once removed, read the options on the wall mount.

These are the basic terminals needed for wiring in a smart thermostat. While the base plate is off, check to see if the wire coming from the wall to your thermostat has any spare wires. If it does, then you are in good shape. If not, you may need to add a wire. For this, I recommend calling a service technician. Once complete, reconnect the thermostat back to the wall.
